Coreless motor technology is developing towards structural innovation and brushless design, with wide applications and a large price range. Specific developments are as follows:
Breakthroughs in Brushed Coreless Motor Technology
Rotor Structure Innovation: Brushed coreless motors have achieved a major breakthrough in rotor structure, abandoning the traditional iron-core rotor form and adopting a coreless rotor, i.e., a hollow cup rotor. This unique design fundamentally eliminates energy loss caused by eddy currents formed in the iron core, improving the motor's energy conversion efficiency and making the motor more energy-efficient during operation.
Development Trends of Coreless Motors
Transition from Brushed to Brushless: The development of coreless motors shows a trend of transitioning from brushed to brushless. Brushed motors rely on mechanical commutation; as the motor rotates, the brushes slide along the commutator to generate a dynamic magnetic field. However, this mechanical commutation method has significant drawbacks. The relative sliding between the brushes and the commutator leads to component wear, not only shortening the motor's lifespan but also generating problems such as electrical sparks and electromagnetic interference.
The advantages of brushless motors are becoming increasingly apparent: Brushless motors achieve electronic commutation through a driver. Because they lack brushes, they are called "brushless motors." Electronic commutation avoids the energy loss and component wear caused by mechanical friction in brushed motors, resulting in higher efficiency, longer lifespan, and lower maintenance costs. Simultaneously, brushless motors operate more smoothly and with lower noise, better meeting the stringent performance requirements of modern industrial and consumer electronics sectors. With continuous technological advancements, the cost of brushless coreless motors is gradually decreasing while their performance is continuously improving, leading to a very broad market prospect.
Coreless Motor Applications
Low-end Applications: Coreless motors have relatively low unit prices in low-end applications, ranging from tens to hundreds of yuan. For example, electric toothbrushes are a common low-end application scenario for coreless motors, with unit prices as low as tens of US dollars per unit. These applications have relatively low performance requirements for the motor, focusing primarily on cost and basic functionality. Power tools are another low-end application area for coreless motors, with unit prices around 100 US dollars per unit. Power tools typically require motors with a certain power and torque to meet various work needs, but the requirements for motor precision and stability are relatively low.
High-end applications: In high-end applications, the unit price of cored motors is much higher. For example, in the medical field, the average price of a medical cored motor can reach US$260 per unit. Medical equipment has extremely high requirements for motor performance and reliability, demanding high precision, high stability, and low noise to ensure the safety and accuracy of medical procedures. Cored motors, with their unique structure and excellent performance, can meet the stringent requirements of the medical field, and are therefore widely used in high-end medical equipment. Besides the medical field, high-end fields such as aerospace and robotics also have high demands for cored motors. These fields also have stringent requirements for motor performance and quality, driving the development of cored motors towards higher performance and higher quality.
