A speed reducer is a power transmission mechanism that uses gears to reduce the rotational speed of a motor (electric motor) to a desired speed while providing a larger torque. Speed reducers are widely used in mechanisms for transmitting power and motion. They can be found in almost all types of mechanical transmission systems, from ships, automobiles, and locomotives in transportation, heavy construction machinery, processing tools and automated production equipment in the machinery industry, to everyday appliances and clocks. Their applications range from high-power transmission to low-load, precise angle transmission. In industrial applications, speed reducers have both speed reduction and torque increase functions. Therefore, they are widely used in speed and torque conversion equipment.

Functions

The main functions of a speed reducer are:
1) Reducing speed while increasing output torque. The torque output ratio is the motor output multiplied by the reduction ratio, but it is important to note that this should not exceed the speed reducer's rated torque.

2) Reducing the load's inertia while reducing speed. The reduction in inertia is the square of the reduction ratio. You can see that most motors have an inertia value.

Working Principle

A speed reducer is generally used in low-speed, high-torque transmission equipment. It reduces the speed of an electric motor, internal combustion engine, or other high-speed power source by meshing a smaller gear on the input shaft with a larger gear on the output shaft. Ordinary speed reducers may also have several pairs of gears operating on the same principle to achieve the desired speed reduction. The ratio of the number of teeth on the large gear to the number of teeth on the small gear is the transmission ratio.

Differences

A speed reducer reduces the speed of a motor through a mechanical transmission device, while a frequency converter (VFD) adjusts the speed of a motor by changing the frequency of the alternating current. Reducing motor speed using a VFD can achieve energy savings. Well-known domestic VFD manufacturers include Sanjing and Invt.
