The planetary gear starter works by significantly increasing torque through a planetary gear set, enabling a small motor to drive a large load.


I. Core Working Principle

The planetary gear starter consists of a DC motor, a planetary gear reduction mechanism, an electromagnetic switch (with pull/holding coil), a one-way clutch, and a drive gear. During operation, the electromagnetic switch pushes the drive gear against the flywheel ring gear, simultaneously energizing the motor. The high-speed rotation of the motor, after being reduced and torque-increased by the planetary gear set, is transmitted to the engine flywheel via the one-way clutch to start the engine. After starting, the one-way clutch slips to prevent back drag.


II. Planetary Gear Reduction Mechanism

It employs a layout of a sun gear (input), planetary gears (3-4), a planetary carrier (output), and a fixed ring gear. It typically achieves a reduction ratio of 4-5:1, increasing the output torque to 4-5 times the original motor torque while simultaneously reducing the rotational speed. The gear material is mostly 20CrMnTi with carburized treatment, achieving a surface hardness of HRC58-62.


III. Technical Parameters and Characteristics


1. Reduction Ratio: Commonly 3.5:1 to 5:1 (e.g., a Bosch model is 4.4:1)


2. No-load Speed: Approximately 3000-6000 rpm (motor speed before reduction)


3. Braking Torque: Typically 150-300 N·m for small vehicles


4. Operating Voltage: 12V/24V DC, instantaneous current up to 400-600A


IV. Advantages Compared to Traditional Direct Drive


1. Increased Torque: Output torque is approximately 3 times higher than direct drive at the same power output.


2. Optimized Size: Axial length reduced by 30%-40% (e.g., Denso RED series)


3. Cold Start Performance: Effective starting even at -30℃


4. Motor Load: Required motor power reduced by approximately 50% (e.g., a 1.2kW planetary type can achieve the effect of a 2.5kW direct drive).


V. Application Precautions


1. Gear lubrication requires the use of a special low-temperature grease (which maintains fluidity at -40℃).


2. 3. One-way clutches require regular wear checks to prevent slippage during startup.


4. Electromagnetic switch contacts with operating currents exceeding 200A should be made of silver-cadmium alloy.


5. During installation, the clearance between the drive gear and the flywheel ring gear should be maintained at 2.5-3.5mm (adjustment with shims is required).
