Geared motors can be classified in various ways, but the core classification is based on their internal transmission structure and final output form. Understanding the characteristics of different types is crucial when selecting a model.

I. Classification by Transmission Principle (Gear Type): This is the most fundamental classification method, directly determining performance. Gear-driven geared motors (high efficiency, wide range of applications) are characterized by high efficiency (typically >95%) through gear meshing, compact structure, and long lifespan.

Main types: Planetary geared motors: High rigidity, high precision (small backlash), high torque, suitable for high-end applications such as servo motors, robots, and precision machine tools.

Helical geared motors: Smooth transmission, low noise, and high load-bearing capacity; the most common general-purpose geared motor in industry.

Bevel geared motors: Input and output shafts are perpendicular at 90°; suitable for applications requiring a change in transmission direction. Parallel shaft geared motors: Input and output shafts are parallel; simple structure, economical and practical.

2. Worm Gear Motor (High Speed Ratio, Self-Locking): Features: Utilizes a worm gear to drive a worm wheel, achieving a very high reduction ratio in a single stage, with a compact structure. It possesses a reverse self-locking characteristic (only the worm can drive the worm wheel; otherwise, it locks), but its efficiency is relatively low (approximately 60%-90%). Applications: Suitable for low-speed, high-torque applications requiring self-locking, such as conveyor lines, hoists, and slewing bearings.

3. Cycloidal Pinwheel Motor (High Load, High Rigidity): Features: Employs a cycloidal wheel and pin gear meshing, resulting in a high reduction ratio, extremely high load-bearing capacity, resistance to overload impacts, long service life, and high precision. Applications: Commonly used in heavy industry, mining machinery, lifting equipment, and other harsh working conditions.

II. Classification by Output Direction and Structure: Coaxial Gear Motor: The input shaft and output shaft are on the same axis, with a symmetrical structure and convenient installation. Right-Angle Gear Motor: The input shaft and output shaft are perpendicular at 90° (common in worm gear and bevel gear structures), saving installation space.

III. Classification by Specific Function and Industry: Precision geared motors: Primarily referring to planetary and harmonic geared motors, emphasizing low backlash and high positioning accuracy, used in robots, semiconductor equipment, and precision measuring instruments. Continuously variable speed (CVT) geared motors: Output speed can be continuously adjusted mechanically or electronically to meet process speed control requirements. Summary and Selection Recommendations: There is no single best type, only the most suitable type. Selection requires comprehensive consideration of: Load and Torque: Heavy loads require cycloidal or planetary gears; medium to light loads require helical gears. Accuracy Requirements: High-precision positioning requires planetary or harmonic gears. Installation Space: Limited space allows for right-angle or compact planetary gears. Efficiency and Self-Locking: Prioritize efficiency with gears; require self-locking with worm gears.
